Close Up on the F-4 Phantom, Part 1 (1969-74) in IAF Service - by Ofer Zidon The First F-4s (Called Kurnas in the IAF) entered in service with the IAF in 1969 and were immediately operated in the War of Attrition with Egypt serving as a multi role fighter-bomber. Later, in the October 1973 War , the Phantoms played a decisive role inflecting heavy damages on the Syrians and the Egyptians and shut down many enemy aircraft, although 13 F-4s were lost during that war. After the war the US continues to provide more Phantoms to Israel , till 1976. In All 204 F-4E & 12 RF-4E/S were supplied serving under the colours of 4 Squadron: “The Hammers”, “The One”, “The Bat” & “Orange Tail”. The Phantoms continued to take part in all the IAF operations and are still in use today. Part 2 of the F-4 story in the IAF will be published in our next magazine |

The 1956 Suez Campaign stripes – by Shlomo Aloni As three Air forces: France, Great Britain & Israel participated in the 1956 Suez Campaign fighting Egypt, it was essential to share a common identification apart of the national roundels of each country. This problem was solve (As it was done in D-Day by the Allied) by introducing an identification band composed by 5 stripes: Yellow, black, yellow, black, yellow, which were painted on the three nations aircraft. |
